  Alison Mackie, The Gypsy Chronicles. During her formative years in Seville, Mackie had an Andalusian Gypsy nanny by the name of Ahalita. Unable to bear children of her own, Ahalita poured all of her maternal affection upon Alison. Ahalita was a flamenco dancer and no sooner was Alison's mother gone for her day’s outing, than Ahalita would place a flamenco record upon the turn table. Mackie's love for Flamenco and Ahalita came together in a sweet romantic novel of short stories called The Gypsy Chronicles. The book was published in 2007 and it was not long before she started hearing back from readers "I thought all Gypsies were poor thieving con-artists but your Gypsies are different ... I thought Gypsy women were prostitutes but yours are closer to being saints etc... " Increasingly aware that most of her readers knew only about the negative stereotypes she set out to create a second website. TheGypsyChronicles.net is not about the happy fairytale Gypsies within her book - instead the site is a reflection upon a side of Gypsy culture rarely reported upon in the news media. In addition to music and the arts there will be stories of heroic activists who are making inroads in the fight against racism and hate crimes. “The criminal stereotype of the Roma fails to recognize Roma as victims of crime too – and in particular of hate crime." As The Gypsy Chronicles is constantly evolving, one is likely to find something new with each visit. Mackie is quick to point out that her website is a reflection of what she finds interesting in Gypsy culture - and that it does not purport to represent the totality of Gypsy culture
